Famous Surbiton trophy missing as frostbite goes on

David Mooney won the Northern Hemisphere's first tournament of the year in great style, recording six wins out of six games in the Surbiton 'Frostbite' event today, 1st January.

Last year's winner, David Openshaw, went on to captain the victorious GB team in the MacRob, so who knows what fame and prestige lies ahead for this year's winner? Mmm. One wonders if the MacRob shield will be returned in time to present to the next winning team, since the Frostbite trophy was nowhere to be seen today.

The temperature was positively antipodean for this time of year, having risen by 17C in the preceding 24 hours and leading to people playing in their shorts, stripping off their jumpers and to Gina Lewis stripping off even further (enough said before a salacious photograph finds its way to the Gazette....).

George Nobel worked hard to get the lawns in good nick. Then, labouring under the misapprehension that a new millennium was beginning today, he organised some very loud fireworks. But Chris Osmond, labouring in the kitchen but under no misapprehension about how special an event this is, prepared a superb five-course lunch.

And all this for a tenner!
