Paul Swaffield won the Edgbaston Advanced Weekend

[<<] [>>] by Andrew Gregory at Edgbaston Croquet club
12 Aug 2012 (AC)

Paul Swaffield won the Edgbaston Advanced Weekend with five wins out of six.

A disappointingly small field of nine gathered at Edgbaston. The lawns were good and true, but their slowness made breaking down rare even at our humble (Super)B level. Paul Swaffield got proceedings started with a TP. The last 2 unbeaten were Martin Granger Brown (MGB) and your correspondent, who reached rover and peg before Martin hit the last shot and finished with a TP. On Sunday morning I was beaten by another TP, this from Robbie Dodds. Had MGB beaten Swaffield, I had my pet best-of-2 final lined up, but MGB broke down on a TP and Swaffield eventually won. This left Swaffield, Dodds and MGB with one loss each. The last round of Swiss saw Swaffield beat Dodds, while MGB was narrowly beaten by Sean Sheridan, who earned himself a reduction to 1.5. This left Paul Swaffield the clear winner. However the loudest and perhaps unkind applause was given to the last game to finish, as Ian Slater beat Henry Fellows in a game that started at 9.30. Though at about 5.5 hours I don't think it even comes in the top 10 of longest games I've Mangled. Come on fellow Managers, you don't need Time limits!
