Surbiton Speed Doubles

Everybody knows that Handicap Doubles is boring. Every game takes three to four hours. What can be done about it?

Well, what about putting a clock on every lawn and giving each side just 45 minutes to finish? This is what we did at Surbiton last weekend. It is surprising what effect is has on people. Most games finished in under 90 minutes and some under 60. Nine full, 26-pt games of handicap doubles in one weekend? No problem.

Speed' does not mean rushing around. It means getting ready, making up your mind quickly and getting on with it.

Numbers were a little down for this, the seventh Surbiton Speed Doubles Tournament (it was a mistake to clash with Glastonbury this year). However, we had ten pairs contesting a round robin. We had some new faces, including Mark Homan and Simon Hathrell from the Edge of the Universe - Watford. They played very well to finish runners-up. The winners were Celia Steward (Ipswich) and George Noble (Chiswick Brewery).
